Drone technology to fight malaria in South Africa

Drones will hopefully soon be used in the fight malaria.

The Department of Science and Technology and Nuclear Technologies in Medicine’s Biosciences Initiative at the Nuclear Energy Corporation of SA has been working on a project that could use drones to deliver sterile male mosquitoes.

Lizette Koekemoer, an associate professor at the Wits Research Institute for Malaria, shares how this will work, and why they are targeting male mosquitoes.

It targets specifically the male mosquitoes. Male mosquito's don't bite, it's the females that bite us and therefore the males don't transmit disease.

Lizette Koekemoer, an associate professor at the Wits Research Institute for Malaria

So if we can sterilise the male they will mate with females in the wild and those females won't go on to produce the next generation of mosquitoes that can bite and feed and transmit disease.

Lizette Koekemoer, an associate professor at the Wits Research Institute for Malaria

Currently its not in place in South Africa but in future we hope it will be.
