'People are misunderstanding democracy' Zuma tells Stephen Grootes

Midday Report host and EWN senior reporter Stephen Grootes is attending the World Economic Forum on Africa in Durban.

The 2017 theme of the conference is inclusive and sustainable growth. Grootes says President Jacob Zuma made a few comments relating to the importance of the WEF and how pleased he was that it is being hosted in Durban.

I asked him quite directly, if he felt rejected by workers at Cosatu's main May Day rally on Monday. His response to this was; people are misunderstanding democracy.

Grootes adds that President Zuma didn't look unsettled but in a strange way knows that the WEF has not been a place he has felt comfortable at.

It's not his natural place.

But it is in Durban. It is the centre of his stronghold, so i think that gives him a sense of confidence.

Grootes explains that President Zuma's role as head of state is to welcome delegates at the WEF.

Finance Minister, Malusi Gigaba is also attending the conference and is expected to deliver an address later on Wednesday. Grootes says Gigaba will be cautious to not disrupt the markets especially with talks of radical economic transformation.

It's going to be half an hour of tightrope walking by Malusi Gigaba this evening. If anyone can do it, I think he can.
