SA Airlink comes to the rescue in St Helena

SA Airlink says it's working with a charter operator in a once off mission to St Helena after a ship that has long been the only way of reaching the remote South Atlantic island went out of service because due to a broken propeller.

Aircrafts have previously jetted off to the island for a set of trials conducted on the £300 million airport.

READ: R4.8 billion spent on an airport where planes can't land

This after Britain’s Department for International Development (DFID), spent £285.5 million on the airport without addressing the problem of strong winds over the runway.

An aircraft travelling to the island this week is expected to land on Wednesday but was delayed in a refueling process in Angola.

The creation of the airport was a work in progress for a very long period of time and it was finished I believe in 2015. And an operator from South Africa performed some flight trials there in May last year, noted the wind sheer and thought that presented difficult landing conditions to the extent that they thought performing scheduled air services to St Helena may be problematic.

Rodger Foster, CEO at Airlink

Subsequently, more research has been done....here is the key issue. Is the aircraft appropriate to be able to perform at that particular runway ... we don't expect any difficulties.

Rodger Foster, CEO at Airlink

It parted from there approximately two hours ago, and it will be getting quite close to approaching St Helena right now.
