Chaos erupts in Parly between Carrim and Mngxitama

CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies speaks to the leader of the lobby group Black First Land First, Andile Mngxitama, and the chairman of the standing committee on finance, Yunus Carrim, following the altercations between the two in Parliament on Wednesday.

Mngxitama says he refuses to be harassed and be treated as a child when he voices his views against white monopoly capital.

Mngxitama was giving a presentation on the transformation of the financial sector and all hell broke loose after Joanmariae Fubbs, chair of the parliamentary committee on trade and industry tried to set a time limit on Mngxitama’s presentation.

Carrim asked Mngxitama to leave the chamber after he called Fubbs a “fascist”, but he refused to leave.

He leaves his chair, comes to me, looking like superman - that man would've been injured yesterday, its just that we restrained ourselves.

Andile Mngxitama, leader of the Black First Land First

Carrim is not superman, he must behave. If he lost a debate it's fine, there will be another day where he can improve on his debates.

On the other hand, Carrim says Mngxitama came to Parliament to verbally abusive the committee and to cause disruptions rather than contribute to a discourse.

I've been chairing committees since 1998 and I've been in Parliament since 1994 and never before have we had such a performance from civil society.

Yunus Carrim, chairman of the standing committee on finance

As the finance committee, we encourage open and public participation.
