President Zuma's affidavit pleads ignorance of Gordhan intelligence report

The Democratic Alliance (DA) filed an application with High Court in Tshwane to compel President Jacob Zuma to hand over the intelligence report he allegedly relied on to sack Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

EWN reporter Barry Bateman was in court on Thursday morning.

Bateman says the DA is arguing that President Zuma's decision to fire former finance minister Pravin Gordhan based on the so-called intelligence report is irrational and should be set aside.

In order for the DA's application to proceed, the party will need to have access to the intelligence report.

It does appear the DA is trying to force the hand of the President.

Barry Bateman, EWN reporter

Bateman says the Presidents affidavit filed with the court 'almost pleads ignorance' and suggests the DA relied on statements made publicly by deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa and Gordhan.

What the president is saying in his papers is that the DA has referred to this document, they bear the onus to produce this and say who authored it.

Barry Bateman, EWN reporter

Bateman explains that the President wants the DA to get confirmatory affidavits from the likes of Gordhan and Ramaphosa who publicly referred to this report.

If the court rules in favour of the DA and requests the President to disclose this document, it will raise many questions such as the authenticity of the document, who authored it and gave it to President Zuma, says Bateman.
