The Personal Finance series with Warren Ingram

How to protect your wealth in these trying economic times...

There are a number of ways to protect your investments in these turbulent times.

Ray White (in for Bruce Whitfield on The Money Show) interviewed Galileo Capital Financial Advisor Warren Ingram for the weekly personal finance feature.

Ingram answered a number of questions:

What role can physical commodities like gold or Krugerrands play in your portfolio?

  • Inflation hedge

  • Protection against systemic risk

What about physical property – property prices in the Cape are booming – is this a good idea?

  • Physical assets are always comforting to investors

  • A rising market is great, but rental income is not rising at same rate

  • Concentration risk – too much capital in one asset

What about overseas investments?

  • Diversification is good

  • Be careful about the exchange rate that you use

What about buying a property overseas?

  • Ensure you have a legal understanding of your rights and obligations

  • Some areas might be very over-priced (e.g. London)

What is the best way then?

  • Rational diversification

  • Spread your assets across a range of investment types and in different countries

  • Be ready to take advantage of opportunities if other people start panicking
