Former Presidents launch national dialogue to address threats to SA's democracy

Former heads of state, Thabo Mbeki, FW de Klerk and Kgalema Motlanthe, as well as former deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, along with numerous foundations of South African liberation icons have launched a new initiative to address the current threats to South Africa’s democracy.

Foundations of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, Desmond Tutu, Helen Suzman, Chief Albert Luthuli and many others are involved.

The National Foundations Dialogue Initiative is hosting a series of discussions on the crisis facing the country.

Mbeki, Motlanthe and de Klerk are meeting in Johannesburg to kick-start a national dialogue.

EWN senior reporter, Gia Nicolaides, says the former presidents say the 'general national crisis" needs to be addressed urgently by South Africans.

Nicolaides says de Klerk raised that leaders have failed to uphold the Constitution.

He [de Klerk] was talking about radical transformation and the state of our economy.

Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter

Mbeki said he joined the dialogue because the nation is sick and it's time to get the people to speak.

There have been references made directly to President Jacob Zuma.

Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter

Mbeki made a remark directed at Zuma saying no personal actions can be more supreme than the will of the people.
