Former heads of state call for proper leadership

The initial installment of what will be a series of dialogues across the country has been concluded.

The National Foundations Dialogue Initiative, on Friday, launched conversations to address what they believe is a the deep and pervasive general crisis facing the country.

Former President Thabo Mbeki as well as Former heads of state FW de Klerk and Kgalema Motlanthe kicked off the first dialogue in Johannesburg.

Their foundations, as well as a number of other organisations have come together for the initiative.

Gia Nicolaides was there.

It's really bringing people together, giving the citizen a voice to actually sit down and actually speak about some of the critical issues that the country is facing at the moment.

Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter

They have said that now is the time to have this national dialogue because there are a number of issues facing our country, of course, the economy is one of the big ones, how we can restore the values that South Africa has lost or is losing and the call for proper role models and leadership.

Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter

Those involved say these talks will occur across the country over a period of two to three years.

They need to get everybody on the ground to have an opportunity to say what is going on in their communities and hopefully through that, they will be able to put forward a document that they will hand over to government, and hopefully, it may result in some policy formation.
