How a group of geeks enabled the revolution that allows you to read this article

Walter Isaacson hit the big-time with his top selling biography of Steve Jobs. He now follows it up with yet another biography, this time of the creators of computers and the internet.

In “The Innovators - How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution” Isaacson recounts the history of the digital revolution and the innovation that led to the wired world we live in today.

Who are the pioneers, hackers and entrepreneurs that created the internet? How did their minds work? What made them so creative? How did they collaborate?

Isaacson begins way back with Ada Lovelace, Lord Byron's daughter, who became the first ever programmer in the 1840s.

Vannevar Bush, Alan Turing, John von Neumann, Doug Engelbart, Robert Noyce, Gordon Moore, Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak, Larry Page... “The Innovators” is packed with bios of all the pioneers.

Isaacson shows that innovation is a collaborative effort.

The Second World War was a great driver; the internet was driven by the Cold War. LSD played a major role [in the digital revolution]. The environment of innovation is very contextual.

The invention of the transistor was driven by people who had dads, with basements, who were obsessed with radio.

The innovators had tremendous support. They did not succeed against all odds. They had the support of government.
