ANC then and now, new documentary reveals "promises and lies" of ruling party
Promises and Lies — Fault Lines in the ANC [African National Congress] documentary reflects on the political ideals and promises of freedom that motivated the liberation struggle.
It looks at current landscape of political crisis in which ‘new South Africans’, find themselves complicit, and reveals photographs of ANC members in exile (Zambia and Tanzania, 1989-90).
The documentary also shows interviews with former finance minister, Trevor Manuel, and Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) head Robert McBride.
Former President Kgalema Motlanthe attended the first screening of the documentary‚ and former finance minister, Pravin Gordhan, delivered the opening address at Constitution Hill on Thursday last week.
Karima Brown speaks to producer and director of the documentary, Dr Siona O'Connell.
O'Connell says images show how struggle activists, including Chris Hani, Oliver Tambo and many others, envisioned South Africa's future.
Images in the documentary also show how the ANC treated its prisoners and women in exile.
