#ParkTownBoys: 'If due processes were not followed someone will have to walk'

Gauteng MEC Panyaza Lesufi says a task team has been appointed to investigate allegations of sexual assault at Parktown Boys' High School.

A water polo coach at the Johannesburg school has been accused of assault after surveillance footage allegedly caught the teacher fondling a pupil's genitals.

On Monday, School Governing Board member, Nicholas Greyling, said the video was discovered in November last year and police were then involved in the matter.

20 pupils have brought accusations against the 22-year-old assistant hostel master.

Lesufi has expressed his disappointment with the SGB (School Governing Body), as well as the district office.

He insists the matter was not dealt with accordingly.

Schools must always be a place of safety for kids, and if something of this nature happens you can't just say I have reported the matter to police and that's the end without clearly stipulating how you will protect those kids as we move forward.

Lesufi says if the SGB failed to follow due processes in the appointment of the coach, someone will have to walk.

When you appoint someone as the SGB, there are strict measures that need to be followed. You need to make sure that that particular person is appropriately vetted, taking all the relevant databases that we utilise before that person can stand in front of children or work with children. If those processes were not followed I can assure you someone is going to walk.

He says new evidence has emerged, as well as reports of numerous challenges at the school.
