Khayelitsha forum calls for urgent intervention after child murders

The Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) has called for urgent interventions following a spate of child murders in the area.

Last week the body of four-year-old Iyapha Yamile was found in a plastic bag, allegedly dumped near her aunt’s house.

Days later, Cape Town police arrested a Khayelitsha father for the rape and murder of his two-year-old daughter.

The 25-year-old suspect, who had recently been released from prison, was taken into custody following the toddler's death on Sunday morning. The suspect is expected to appear in court this week.

KDF chairperson Ndithini Thyido says they are disgusted by the killings, and that drug use has been linked to most of the murders.

The usage of drugs in all of them, and interestingly in Khayelitsha you will find no drug rehabilitation centre.

The Khayelitsha Development Forum is now let with no choice but to convene on an urgent basis all stakeholders to come together and look at the nature and maybe at a deep generation of morals..... you can't imagine a father raping their own 14 month child, that is unheard of it, it is inhumane.

Ndithini Thyido, chairperson of Khayelitsha Development Forum

We are calling on all all three tiers of government to help, this is no time for cheap political scoring, this is a time to meaningfully intervene.
