'There wouldn't be a new democratic SA if it wasn't for de Klerk'

Chairman of the FW de Klerk Foundation says there wouldn't have been a new democratic South Africa if its wasn't for the role played by FW de Klerk.

You forget for a moment that there wouldn't be a new democratic South Africa if it wasn't for FW de Klerk's role to play.

Dave Steward, Chairman of the FW de Klerk Foundation

FW de Klerk was good enough for Mandela. Nelson Mandela always referred with praise to the role that de Klerk played in laying the foundation for a new South Africa.

Dave Steward, Chairman of the FW de Klerk Foundation

Eusebius McKaiser hosted political analyst, Sithembile Mbete, analysing de Klerk's role in current political dynamics.

Steward said Eusebius is anti-white and asked Eusebius "who the hell are you?"

Eusebius challenged the fact that such a statement implies black South Africans did not have the agency to bring about an end to apartheid without the help of FW de Klerk.

Listen to the full conversation between Eusebius and Steward below...

Mbete says de Klerk believed the ideas in which apartheid was founded for a long time.

She argues that de Klerk doesn't seem to regret apartheid and has implied that the principle was correct, it's just the implementation that was wrong".

He didn't play open cards with the TRC... There is still lot of information that de Klerk has and we will probably never know.

Sithembile Mbete, political analyst

He stands by apartheid's founding principle of separate developments in separation of races and groups with concomitant separation of access to resources. He is not apologetic about it.

Sithembile Mbete, political analyst

He does not see the past political system as criminal, which was declared by the United Nations, that is not the kind of person we want to help us shape our future.

Sithembile Mbete, political analyst

The discussion follows the launch of a national dialogue by de Klerk, former Presidents Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Motlanthe along with numerous foundations of South African liberation icons aiming to address South Africa's crisis.

Critics have argued that de Klerk has no place on that platform.

Listen to Mbete's analysis and callers' views below as well as clips of de Klerk himself explaining his current views...
