South African Council of Educators says anybody who interacts with learners must be registered with the council to ensure undesirable people are not employed by schools.
This comes after a 22-year-old former water polo coach and assistant boarding master at Parktown Boys' High School has been accused of sexually assaulting 20 pupils.
Spokesperson for the Council, Themba Ndhlovu, says people working with pupils such as sports coaches should produce a police clearance.
Ndhlovu says it's also important to keep the database updated when teachers get suspended or fired for misconduct.
