Kenyan long-distance runner Eliud Kipchoge smashed Dennis Kimetto's world record of 2:02:57, at the sub-2 hour marathon in Italy on Saturday.

The Olympic medalist ran the 42.2km around the Monza motor racing track at two hours and 25 seconds in a test to become the first person in the world to run under two hours.

Sports scientist, Dr Ross Tucker spoke to John Maytham about some of technicalities that may have influenced Kipchoge's impressive run.

Tucker says the presence of a vehicle in front of the athlete provided a break against wind resistance.

That is my reading of it based on the mathematics and the engineering of what it involves, for an athlete to run at that speed they would probably spend around 15% of their energy just overcoming air resistance so if you take that away it's reasonably easier.
