Prasa's turnaround plan: 1 100 coaches to be recovered over the next year

Amid plans to cut costs by more than R1 billion over the next year, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) hopes to have 800 more coaches in service to increase the number to 3 500.

Group chief strategy officer, Sipho Sithole, told the Transport Portfolio Committee on Tuesday, that that the company's good work is being undone by constant attacks on its infrastructure.

Kieno Kammies spoke to Acting group CEO LindiKhaya Zide about plans to tackle the vandalism and destruction of infrastructure, as well as security issues.

Our customers require a reliable, safe, clean and dignified service and I will be the first to admit that we are not coming anywhere close to those values and requirements.

Lindikhaya Zide, Acting group CEO

The reality is we have almost 40% of our stock out of service. We have 1 298 coaches that are out of service, now the first priority is to ensue first that we have those coaches in services. In this regard we have put out a plan that will ensure that in at least the next 18 months we would have recovered at least 1 100 coaches.

Lindikhaya Zide, Acting group CEO

He says the agency has identified other areas of improvement, including one time performance and customer satisfaction.

There are a number of interventions... firstly is to engage and have agreements with SAPS top assist us with these areas that are hot spots on vandalism. Secondly whilst we have in our structures, our stakeholder metrics that includes our commuters, we are planning to have a summit in July where all the commuter forums that are represented across our corridors will have a meeting with us.
