Ancient skull unearthed on Noordhoek beach

In a clean-up organised by the Noordhoek Environmental Action Group on Saturday, a resident of Noordhoek, Cape Town, stumbled upon a human skull. The South African Police and park rangers were called in to establish where the skull came from. Archaeologist Tim Hart was also among those who were brought in to examine the skull.

According to Hart, although it’s still early days, the assumption is that the skull could be of a youngish individual who lived in the pre-colonial times. He says the skull was not a gruesome discovery; it could be 350 years old, possibly of a hunter and gatherer community (Khoikhoi or San).

Because the skull was discovered in a public area it has since been moved to University of Cape Town’s archaeology department for safe-keeping.
