Construction workers halt an attempted hijack and save the day

Twenty-eight construction workers came to the rescue of an Edenvale man, Dino Salgado.

The twenty-eight employees of CT Building Contractors intervened in what was an attempted hijacking while they were on the second floor of a house under construction.

One of the construction workers spotted Salgado speeding into his driveway with a vehicle on his trail.

Richard Munro, Site Manager of CT Building Contractors says his staff is overwhelmed about the incident and the response the heroic act garnered from the public.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon around 12:45 pm.

We were working in the office when we heard one of them scream. We were unaware of what was happening at the time.

Richard Munro, Site Manager of CT Building Contractors

Munro says when they ran out of the office to find out what where the screams were coming from, he saw rocks and heard sounds of smashing glass.

One of the employees saw the man who lived next door rushing into his house with a Golf 7 following closely behind him. When the employee saw two men get out of the car, carrying a gun and wearing a balaclava he yelled "Tsotsi Tsotsi" to alert his colleagues.

There were gunshots going off and rocks being thrown at the car. It was like a movie.

Salgado managed to drive into his garage and shut it behind him while the construction workers took on the gunmen outside.

Munro says the attackers got out of the vehicle with three of them trying to open the gate leading to the house which had closed behind them, leaving them trapped in Salgado's yard.

One of the attackers started shooting at the construction workers but the men continued to hurl stones and rocks at the armed men.
