Bob Dylan live: "You really felt like you were there for a private rehearsal"

During Dylan's most recent two-hour live performance he did not address a single word to his audience.

John Maytham says he found only one review of the show, where Dylan apparently alternated between singing and just playing the piano. He did not play the guitar at all as his hands are in bad condition and he is unable to do so.

Half of the evening's repertoire were his own compositions made famous over the years, and the other half were songs from The great American Songbook and the reviewer wrote: 'Rod Stewart does that much better.' She added that he 'murdered' his own songs.

Gary Jordan of Jordan Wines is about to board a plane at Heathrow back to South Africa joins John on the line to talk about his experience at the concert.

John, I think if you expected to hear the Bob Dylan of the 60s and 70s you would have been disappointed, because people age. But it was still an absolutely incredible performance.

Jordan describes the stage lights and setting.

You really felt like you were there for a private rehearsal. And yet he didn't say a word from start to finish.

He says Dylan appeared in a white Homberg hat and you almost felt like you were almost intruding.

It wasn't the greatest of venues. The Wembley Arena is not the best place for a Dylan concert.

Jordan disagrees with the review John cited saying it was a great mix of Dylan's classics sung better than he did in 2015 when he get a bad rap on that tour.

I actually found it fascinating.

Dylan has never been an artist who has engaged much with his audience.

He didn't even say hello London...or goodbye London..but this Dylan. This is how he has evolved and people mustn't expect the Dylan of the old days.

Maytham says while this review he read was critical, the reviewer did acknowledge all the concert goers she interviewed were overawed with having seen Dylan live in concert for the first time.

In response to the critic's view that Dylan slurred his words and used new formats that did not work, Jordan agrees if one was not expecting that, the concert may well have been disappointing.

He never introduced the band so one has no idea who was playing. The band was exceptionally slick and the acoustics were incredible.
