New hashtag alert: #ThisIsMyVagina

Speaking to students at a women’s-only event at the anniversary of the Free Sanitary Towel Campaign at the University of Limpopo, the national spokesperson of the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC), Naledi Chirwa told women and girls to take ownership of their vaginas.

The event has since given birth to the hashtag 'This Is My Vagina'. Chirwa says she was inspired to begin this movement because women continue being 'the backdrop of society'.

This is similar to black consciousness politics when Steve Biko said claim your blackness.

Chirwa says it is debilitating to always be chasing after safety as women. She highlights the vulnerability of women and how they are often at risk from men in society.

The social activist explains that her goal is to address the injustices women face.

Even as a young girl, you are told to close your legs, you are told not to play at night. You are trained from a very young age that this body does not belong to you.

Chirwa adds that in addition to empowering women she hopes her efforts will compel men to unlearn their problematic behaviours.
