"Grievance parties like the ANC run out of steam and disappear"

The ANC is the oldest African nationalist party on the continent says businessman and political commentator Moeletsi Mbeki. The nationalist parties in Africa are grievance parties he explains, formed to fight particular grievances.

Once the grievances are addressed they run out of steam, they run out of energy, and they tend to disappear.

Moeletsi Mbeki, businessman and political commentator

The way in which they address their grievance is through consumption, not through production...and therefore through wealth redistribution.

Moeletsi Mbeki, businessman and political commentator

He says such parties inherit a colonial economy or in South Africa's case the apartheid type economy, and they use their power to redistribute to address the grievance in some kind of reparation.

But in the meantime they are unable to grow the economy...and over the years the younger population is no longer interested in those grievances but want a different future....and that is when it starts to be abandoned. And you can clearly see that in Zimbabwe and that is the route we are headed in South Africa.

Moeletsi Mbeki, businessman and political commentator

He says the younger people, the urban population, are thinking differently, and increasingly abandoning the ANC in the large metros.

That's why the ANC are inventing enemies, the so-called 'white monopoly capital' because the population wants development and new job creation. But the nationalist parties don't know how to create jobs and that's how they get abandoned by the voters.

Moeletsi Mbeki, businessman and political commentator

It is not an easy thing to admit, he says, but it is the reality of nationalist parties in Africa..."I'm not saying anything particularly original... It is just what the history of the continent shows us."

What comes next? The people of South Africa are focused on economic development not liberation issues any longer, he says.

ANC has run out of the ability to solve South Africa's problems.... a new party has to have economic solutions.
