Online system introduced to curb fraudulent qualification claims

Stories of fraudulent qualifications by individuals in top government positions have led to phenomenal innovations by the IIE. To curb qualification fraud, the Independent Institute of Education (IIE) has introduced an online verification system to authenticate educational qualifications for their 20 campuses. Every student graduating in any of their campuses will in future be awarded a certificate with a QR code which will give direct access to their academic records.

Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of IIE, spoke to CapeTalk presenter Kieno Kammies about the qualification verification system.

We thought, given the amount of time it takes and the risks associated, we needed to come up with a solution where somebody could be given a code and directly access information from our database to verify the validity of someone’s qualifications.

Dr Coughlan also said the system will also have the student’s additional information like their LinkedIn profiles, photographs and contact information.

The Independent Institute of Education is a private higher education institution operating across 20 sites. IIE offers more than 70 registered and accredited higher education programmes from Higher Certificate to Masters Level on its Varsity College, Vega, Rosebank College and Design School Southern Africa (DSSA) campuses.
