Femicide in SA is 5 times the global average - Sonke Gender Justice

The Sonke Gender Justice group says the 'scary' number of woman dying at the hands of their partners is cause for concern and a national strategic plan is needed.

The organisation has reacted to the murder of 22-year-old Karabo Mokoena.

Mokoena's burnt body was found in a Johannesburg park this week.

The alleged killer believed to be her boyfriend is expected to appear in court on Friday after apparently confessing to the crime.

Sonke Gender Justice's Nonhlanhla Skosana says the rate of femicide is five times more than the global rate.

We need to have a national strategic plan for gender based violence in order to deal with this scourge.

READ: Mokoena previously laid charges against her alleged killer

Karabo opened a case of assault. If someone took it upon themselves to follow up and know who is the investigating officer and how they are investigating the case, I think Karabo would be alive today.

Nonhlanhla Skosana , Community Education Advocacy manager

We need to take responsibility as a community and monitor our justice system and see that justice is done for women in South Africa.
