ISS anticipates political violence ahead of ANC's December conference

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) has lodged papers in the Constitutional Court saying that political violence is likely to intensify in the months leading up to the African National Congress’ December conference, and possibly before the 2019 elections as well.

Gareth Newham says the institute has been tracking incidents of violence since 2013 and has found an increase in deaths amid, what he describes as heightened political contest.

In 2014 we had around 28 political assassinations and in the run up to the 2016 elections we saw 20 political assassinations.

A lot of the assassinations, particularly those more recently are intra-party within the ANC.

Gareth Newham,

Newham says there needs to be more intelligence gathering around these incidents.

Meanwhile, leaders of opposition parties held a briefing ahead of a hearing on the proposed secret ballot decision for the motion of no-confidence vote in President Jacob Zuma.

The leader of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) Bantu Holomisa says a march has been planned to the court for that morning. He insists they have a strong case.

We wouldn't waste our time and our monies to ask the court to protect individual MPs so that they should not be bullied or threatened.
