South Africa's approach to problem solving found to be a risk

Director of the Institute for Futures Research (IFR) at the University of Stellenbosch Business School, Dr Morne Mostert believes that in this environment the biggest risks to the future of creating work in South Africa lies in the approach to solving our social ills.

Mostert recently presented a set of scenarios that captures possible futures for South Africa at a conference hosted by the International Organisation of Employers (OIE) in Madrid, Spain. The initial research was sponsored by Business Unity South Africa (BUSA).

Mostert says some people believe the solution is factionalism. Mostert adds that the mindset that suggests that "the better we fight each other, the better we all are" will hinder the progress rather than advance the country.

South Africa is somehow a special case and therefore deserves a special dispensation.

The big risk about that kind of approach that is you eventually start to defend deeply dysfunctional behaviour.

Mostert says one of the other risks of South Africa thinking it is a special case is the display of the country removing itself from international signatory opportunities such as the International Criminal Court (ICC). Mostert says a way out is adapting an international mindset which involves a combination of cohesion and collaboration together with an internationally competitive outlook which takes cognisance of the rest of the world.
