Pityana: ANC deflecting from Zuma's misdemeanour

Save South Africa convener Sipho Pityana says President Jacob Zuma is obligated to explain his reliance on a dubious intelligence report to justify his Cabinet reshuffle.

Nobody knows where that intelligence information comes from. It is right that South Africans should question the reliance that President places on intel from sources whose integrity cannot be scrutinised by public representatives.

The President is acting on ulterior considerations and information from other sources.

Activists from the Save SA campaign and other organisations have gathered outside the Constitutional Court to stage a night vigil ahead of the the court’s proceedings on Monday.

Organisations and political parties will also march on Monday as the ConCourt is expected ruling on a secret ballot in the Parliament's vote of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma.

Pityana says the joint mobilisation by civil society and political parties is an effort to reflect and amplify the voice of citizens.

He says the civic action is an effort to appeal to members of Parliament (MPs) to put South Africans first when voting in the motion, regardless of their political affiliation.

It's a statement that says people first.

At the same time, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal will hold a day of mass action in Durban against what it calls “judicial overreach” on Monday.

Pityana maintains that the ANC's campaign is a deliberate effort to deflect attention from the misdemeanour of Zuma.

He says the issue at hand is not the role of the court's or the President's Constitutional prerogative, but rather his reliance on the questionable intelligence information.

Take a listen to Sipho Pityana explain Save SA's campaign and the way forward:
