Fedesa to argue over religion in schools

The High Court in Johannesburg will hear on Monday the Federation of Governing Bodies for South African schools (Fedsas) argument over the use of religion in schools.

The case involves the Organistion for Religions Education OGOD.

At the end of 2014, the organisation went to court to challenge the religious ethos of 6 schools they contended were suppressing scientific teachings of evolution, and that the religious ethos of the schools was a form of religious coercion and an abuse of learners' rights.

Fedsas insists that unlike America, South Africa does not have an establishment clause that strictly separates church and state; and that the South African Constitution specifically makes provision for freedom of religion.

People are free to express and manifest their religions in private as well as in public. This organisation wants to ban any and all religion from any school.

Paul Colditz, Fedsas CEO

We are saying it is wrong. People should have the freedom in public places such as public schools to express and manifest their religions.
