'How families raise boy children is key to changing rape culture'

15 May 2017 2:12 PM

Prof Kopano Ratele talks about what needs to be done following the outrage at the brutal killing of Karabo Mokoena and others.

The death of Karabo Mokoena has sparked public outcry and anger against women abuse and how men treat women in South Africa.

22-year-old Mokoena was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend. Her charred remains were discovered in a shallow grave in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg.

The hashtag #MenAreTrash saw women tell their lived experiences of abuse at the hands of men who were their loved ones and strangers.

Professor Kopano Ratele says children who are brought in families where they are violently punished or witness violence are likely to be violent.

Ratele says parents tend to focus more on talking to girls, ignoring boys in conversations.

How families raise their boy children, in particular, is key to change rape culture in South African.

Prof Kopano Ratele, researcher at the Medical Research Council of South Africa

Ratele says there needs to be parental programmes helping parents to raise their children.
