ANC MPs don't need secret ballot to vote President out - Zuma's lawyers

16 May 2017 7:31 AM
Lawyers representing Zuma have argued that the secret ballot against Zuma won't yield different results.

Lawyers representing the National Assembly Speaker and President Jacob Zuma have argued that there is no risk for African National Congress (ANC) Members of Parliament (MPs) to openly vote against President Jacob Zuma if they truly believe he is no longer fit for his position.

Lawyers argued that the assumption that the secret ballot would yield different results, is wrong.

Zuma's lawyer advocate Ishmael Semenya told the Constitutional Court that there is no downside to the secret ballot.

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) wants MPs to be allowed to vote in secret in a motion of no confidence in Zuma.

The UDM brought the matter before the ConCourt after the Speaker, Baleka Mbete, said she has no power to allow for a secret ballot.

The Constitutional Court has reserved judgment.
