[LISTEN] Ramathlodi says he was not aware Guptas wanted to buy Optimum mine

Former Mining Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi has admitted that he was against Eskom's request to suspend all Glencore’s mining licences in South Africa in 2015.

At the time Glencore owned Optimum, the coal mine that supplies Eskom’s Hendrina power station.

Ramatlhodi says Eskom board chair Ben Ngubane asked the suspension come into effect until the R2 billion penalty is paid.

He says he refused due to load shedding at the time, and Ngubane said he would notify President Jacob Zuma about their request.

Three weeks later, Ramatlhodi was removed from his position as the mining minister.

However, Ramatlhodi says only the President can explain whether there is a link between his refusal and being fired.
