'Once off' amnesty for tampered electricity meters expires end of June

City Power in Johannesburg will offer a one time amnesty for people who have tampered with their electricity meters. These people will have their meters reset for free but only until the end of June.

Virgil James, City Power spokesperson says there are a lot of residents and businesses that have tampered with their electricity meters as way of paying less than what they are consuming.

This is rife throughout the city.

Virgil James, City Power spokesperson

James says amnesty is offered as a way to tackle the problem.

With the number of prepaid electricity meters installed they are able to determine that there are a large number of people who are either purchasing electricity irregularly or not at all, he explains.

We trust that we will be able to manage this properly and get the cooperation of those who have tampered with their meters.

Virgil James, City Power spokesperson

James explains that criminal charges will brought against those who do not take advantage of the amnesty.
