Fikile Mbalula says he will intervene in Phahlane/Ipid saga

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says he will intervene in the ongoing case involving the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) and acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane.

The Ipid has called on Phahlane to be suspended or placed on leave until the investigation against him is concluded, while Phahlane says Ipid has been captured by private investigator, Paul O’Sullivan, a complainant in the case.

Charges against Phahlane include defeating the ends of justice, money laundering and suspicious payments.

The latest evidence against him shows that between 2014 and 2016, he sold or traded in several cars and was paid well above the book value for the vehicles.

Phahlane has denied allegations, but Ipid is confident of the evidence against him.

I am going to step up my act in relation to those challenges that have been raised.

Fikile Mbalula, Minister of Police

Ipid head Robert McBride and Phahlane appeared together before the Parliament’s Police Oversight Committee for the first time on Tuesday.

Mbalula says he is worried that Parliament could not come up with the solution, and he is expected to deal with the matter on his own.
