Media union considers newly appointed SABC acting CEO 'very junior'

South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has announced it's acting CEO - just for the next week.

The general executive for technology, Tsheliso Ralitabo, will stand in for chief financial officer James Aguma amid calls or his suspension.

Communications Minister Ayanda Dlodlo told Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) this morning she had asked the interim board to find a new turnaround strategist to minimise the resistance from Aguma.

He's been booked off on sick leave.

The Broadcasting, Electronic Media and Allied Workers' Union's (Bemawu) Hannes du Buisson says they are shocked by the move.

It is not a personal issue but we believe there are much more higher qualified people at the SABC that can lead the organisation. Very junior, so we were quite shocked by the announcement.

Hannes du Buisson, spokesperson

Although this is only a very temporary appointment it just shows there is not an understanding from the board's side on who and who should not be able to act at the SABC.

du Buisson says a response by the SABC in Parliament over irregular payments of millions of rand to an auditing firm are untrue.

The SABC lied this morning in Parliament because I have proof they have paid much more money than R25 million that they say they paid to that audit firm...
