Ousted Hawks boss Berning Ntlemeza says he should be allowed to report for duty

Lieutenant General Berning Ntlemeza’s legal team has told the High Court he should immediately be allowed to return to work as head of the Hawks.

Last month, the High Court in Pretoria ordered that Ntlemeza's appointment be immediately set aside.

But Ntlemeza’s lawyers have argued that the court order, which effectively kicked him out of his job, has technically been suspended because he is appealing the matter.

Ntlemeza has approached the High Court in Pretoria to stop Police Minister Fikile Mbalula from prohibiting him from reporting for duty.

His advocate Nceba Dukada says that order has been appealed and will be heard in the Supreme Court in two weeks’ time.

Mbalula withdrew an appeal by his predecessor Nkosinathi Nhleko to escalate the Ntlemeza matter to the appeal court.

The police minister had last month reiterated that Ntlemeza was no longer head of the Hawks.

Bateman explains the implications of the legal battle and says judgement will be heard in the matter on Thursday at 10am.
