Cosatu commends compensation of Lily mine families, wants bodies repatriated

The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) has welcomed the compensation of those related to the Lily Mine victims.

Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi and Solomon Nyerende fell to their deaths in a container at the mine more than 15 months ago.

The three families have received payments of R200 000 each, and 58 of the 75 miners injured were given R10 000, with R40 000 to follow from the Mineral Resources department.

Cosatu's Sizwe Pamla says efforts to retrieve the container with the bodies of the three mine workers at the Lily Mine in Mpumalanga should be a top priority.

He says while the money will not bring the deceased back, it will help relieve the financial burden on the families who survive on welfare.

Pamla also reiterated calls for an investigation into the tragic collapse.

We commend the Department of Mineral Resources for paying what the have so far. We hope that they are going to keep their promise of paying the additional R40 000.

Sizwe Pamla, Cosatu National Spokesperson

We are encouraged that the negotiations are at an advanced stage with an investor firm that is prepared to takeover operations at Lily Mine.

Sizwe Pamla, Cosatu National Spokesperson

We have made it clear that the priority should be to repatriate the bodies of the missing miners before any operations can resume.

Sizwe Pamla, Cosatu National Spokesperson

We are still also demanding an investigation... If we don't learn lessons from that tragedy, we are likely to repeat the mistakes.
