Lotto downgrade of Sascoc will leave athletes with less funding

SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) could find itself running low on funding.

Journalist, David Isaacson says the downgrading of Sascoc to the status of a national federation by the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) will lead to a massive cut in funding.

They have in the past four years been getting between 70 and a 100 million a year from Lotto. National federations can get a maximum of about 5 million.

David Isaacson, Journalist

The second concern is what they call a 'cooling off period', where Lotto has now imposed a rule that if you get a grant you must wait twelve months before you can apply for the next grant.

David Isaacson, Journalist

Isaacson says NLC is now denying they have downgraded Sascoc to national federation status and says the cooling off period isn't as big a deal.

If Sascoc is unable to get funding, it will mean trouble for South African athletes, Isaacson adds. The successful athletes already have big brands endorsing them and have little to worry about.

He says the guys who are still trying to establish themselves are going to be heavily affected.
