83% of professors in the country are white

Professor Mcebisi Ndletyana says inequality and problems within the public education system are among factors contributing to the lack of black professors in South Africa.

Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande will set up a ministerial task team to find out what is holding black academics back.

Nzimande told Parliament that 83% of the professors in the country are white.

Ndletyana says white pupils are more prepared for university.

There is huge demand on them to start earning income. Most of them are the first generation to go to university. You have an extended family that you need to support. Furthering your education becomes the last option

Professor Mcebisi Ndletyana, University of Johannesburg
