Watch out! Identity theft on the rise (and how to avoid it)

As more and more transactions are done electronically, Manie van Schalkwyk, executive director of SA Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) says the scale of identity theft is also on the rise.

Van Schalkwyk says in 2016, SAFPS saved the banking industry about R1.8 billion.

Here are some of the tips how to safeguard against identity theft:

  • Treat your ID and other personal documents just like you treat money.
  • Do not click on links if you have not initiated a request.
  • Only transact from a website that has https. 'If it doesn't have "s" at the end it is fraudulent'.
  • Avoid any SMS that requests you pay money upfront, it's a scam.

According to van Schalkwyk, SAFPS helps with mediation when people have been scammed.

In addition, if you have lost your identity document they list you as a victim so that the banks and retail stores know you are a victim of ID fraud.

We are a trusting nation. If people say click on this we just do it.

Van Schalkwyk advises that people should "take 5" if they are unsure about something and think about it.

If you think this is too good to be true don't react on it.
