Gender violence in the Spotlight

Listen: Caller shares how police refused to help him find missing daughter

Talk Radio 702's Azania Mosaka received an urgent call from one of her listeners.

Kabelo, says his 13-year-old stepdaughter had been missing for three weeks before being located in an abandoned building in the Johannesburg CBD where she remains.

He says he has opened a case with social development.

The building is too dangerous for us to walk in there. It's like a drug and prostitution den. We couldn't go in.

Kabelo, caller

Kabelo explains that a social worker advised him to go to a police station for assistance. He was told the police are too scared to go there. He adds that on Thursday morning, together with the social worker, they visited the police station again.

The station commander bluntly told me to my face, there is no way he is going to help us. It's too dangerous, they cannot risk their lives going in there for one child.

Kabelo, caller

Kabelo says he camps outside the building daily and often asks people who going in and out of the building to check on his step daughters safety.
