"Hard to believe the minister would not have known about the contract"

Democratic Alliance's Natsha Mazzone says proof of a lucrative pipeline of contracts between Eskom and Gupta-owned Trillian Capital Partners is only the first piece of the puzzle in what she says is a 'myriad of things' involving the power utility.

AmaBhungane said on Thursday that they have proof that Gupta-owned Trillian invoiced Eskom R419 million over nine months in 2016.

In December last year, Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown was responding to parliamentary questions from Mazzone, who asked which “contracts of engagement have been concluded” between Eskom and Trillian, and “what are the costs involved in each case”.

Brown said, “None” and “not applicable”.

In dealing with an issue like this all forms of possible or alleged corruption are exposed, says Mazzone.

It's very much a chess game and you have to play each piece very carefully so that you don't miss a strategic piece of the puzzle. And I think this is the first piece of the puzzle that we have started with and I think we are going to start to find a series of very unfortunate issues unraveling from this.

Natasha Mazzone, DA shadow minister of public enterprises

When asked a question of this importance I think the minister would be very negligent if she just answered on very basic knowledge. I don't want to preempt and falsely accuse the minister of anything but I would find it very hard to believe that the minister would not have known that a contract had been entered into.
