[LISTEN] US researchers' major breakthrough with lab-grown stem cells

Scientists have made a major breakthrough after nearly 20 years, by creating stem cells that can multiply and produce the essential elements of blood.

The studies may help improve the treatment of leukemia and other blood disorders in patients who need bone-marrow transplants but can’t find a compatible donor.

One team is led by stem-cell biologist George Daley of Boston Children’s Hospital in Massachusetts. The second is led by stem-cell biologist Shahin Rafii of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.

The two teams were able to create the cells in mice and humans alike through different methods.

Two independent groups of researchers have made, for the first time stem cells, in fact, bone marrow stem cells that can make all of the elements in your blood.
