'Reducing resources allocated to sexual offences courts is illogical'

As the funeral for Karabo Mokoena gets underway in Johannesburg, and after a series of other murders and attacks in which men have violently attacked or killed women, the justice department is looking to reduce resources made available to the sexual offenses courts.

The announcement was made by Deputy Justice Minister John Jeffery this week.

This has prompted concern from organisations who say it is a disappointing move.

Naeemah Abrahams is the Deputy Director for Medical Research Council's Gender and Health Division.

She says this is completely illogical.

To actually talk about decreasing resources is illogical given what we have seen happening in the last year as well as what we know of the big issues of violence against women in the country.

Naeemah Abrahams, Deputy Director for Medical Research Council's Gender and Health Division

We don't have a national plan with resources allocated for prevention of violence as well as responding to violence other than what justice is doing.
