SACC makes crucial intervention on 'mafia state' - Somadoda Fikeni

The SA Council of Churches (SACC) said on Thursday that South Africa is on the brink of becoming a mafia state, with no point of return.

The organisation released a report from its Unburdening Panel which put together damning allegations of corruption and state capture from whistle blowers.

Professor Somadoda Fikeni, a political analyst based at UNISA, says the SACC has made a very important intervention and it will be interesting to see how they will take the process forward.

He says they made an important assessment which has never been stated before when they said South Africa is becoming a mafia state.

In other words, they are trying to say, you do have organised crime and a deep state parallel to the current state, that might be operating in the present system.

Fikeni responded to the situation in the Northern Cape where the newly elected provincial executive committee of the ANC has called on Premier Sylvia Lucas to reverse her controversial cabinet reshuffle.

He says the situation needs an urgent intervention by the ANC NEC.

If the NEC doesn't intervene, then the ANC will be a weakened source in the province and it might go into 2019 risking loosing control of the province...
