Trump says special council investigation is a 'witch hunt'

US president Donald Trump launched a series of claims on Thursday that the appointment of a special council to investigate him showed that he was the victim of the worst political witch hunt in American history.

At a luncheon with a group of television news anchors Trump said the probe into alleged links between his 2016 campaign and Russia's election hacking "hurts the country."

He also took to twitter.

Stephen Grootes spoke to Brookes Spector, US foreign policy expert.

What this appointment has done, special counsel, the instruction given to him by the deputy attorney general are so broad and so detailed at the same time that it gives almost carte blanche to look wherever he wishes to look...If I were Donald Trump I would be a little nervous too.

Brookes Spector , US foreign policy expert

It is more in the nature of reminding Donald Trump that there are laws, there are rules and there are other institutions, other branches of government and you don't do whatever the heck you want.
