LISTEN: Cop allegedly shot at Standerton protesters, killing teen (16)

A 16-year-old boy was shot dead and another youth wounded during a violent protest in Standerton, Mpumalanga.

It’s alleged the police used live ammunition during a service delivery protest to disperse residents.

The teenager was among protesters marching to Lekwa Local Municipality, accusing it of corruption that is delaying the service delivery in the area.

Standerton resident Zweli Sibeko says he was not part of the protest, but joined the community following the tragic shooting of the teen.

He insists that a uniformed police officer from the Sakhile Police Station opened fire at the community with live ammunition, counting 16 bullet casings.

Sibeko explains that the community raised concerns with councillors and city officials during a heated meeting where police had to intervene on Thursday.

Residents then took to the streets on Friday and feel as though the police have been defending the municipal offices.

The police were protecting the local municipality office, shooting at the people who were protesting and also throwing stones.
