How many foreigners are working in South Africa? Far fewer than you think…

There is a massive disparity between perception and reality when it comes to the number of foreign workers in South Africa, according the Migrating for Work Research Consortium (MiWORC).

International migrants make up only four percent of South Africa’s 33-million strong working population, according to studies by MiWORC.

This means there are 1.2-million migrants from outside of South Africa that form part of the working population.

According to MiWORC, Gauteng, at eight percent, had the highest percentage of foreign-born workers followed by Limpopo and Mpumalanga (four percent), North West and the Western Cape (three percent), Free State (two percent) and the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (one percent).
