UJ opens African Centre for Epistemology and Philosophy of Science

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has launched its African Centre for Epistemology and Philosophy of Science (ACEPS) at the University’s Kingsway Campus.

The centre which was officially opened on Friday aims to foster what the university says is an intra-African and global conversation in areas of Epistemology and Philosophy of Science

The centre founded in 2016 by co-directors Professor Alex Broadbent and Professor Veli Mitova, includes research projects led by Dr Mongane Wally Serote, Dr Ben Smart, Chad Harris and Zinhle Mncube.

Broadbent, is the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities. He explains how the research center will encourage work that is distinctly African in nature and salient to African challenges and concerns.

The central connection is that there is a set of very strong connection between knowledge and power, knowledge gives power and it is also the case that the people who have power are able to say what counts as knowledge or not....if you think about the language you associate with science, there is a historical connection between empire and the development of science, so it makes a great deal of sense to do this here from an African perspective an giving voice to African values.

Alex Broadbent, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities

What the process of decolonising the curriculum generally involves is somehow balancing on the one hand increased respect for things other than those things that are sort f in the cannon of the European academy, on the other hand not slipping into an easy relativism....
