Pros and cons of spinners and fidget cubes for children with ADHD

According to some experts, the use of fidget spinners and fidget cubes can help children with ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

However, psychiatrist, Dr Renata Schoeman says these kinds of statements should be individualised. She says there is no scientific study to prove the value of these toys.

There is only anecdotal evidence... there are completely inconclusive.

She says the toys are beneficial for social activities and can help certain children with anxiety and ADHD to help them self regulate and pay attention.

It helps regulate emotions, to calm them down and to help them not to impulsively jump around so they can sit still and focus better.

Schoeman says there are also cons to these toys which is instant gratification. She says in the process you might be teaching a child that if they are feeling bad they cants just "spin" in stead of creating long-term strategies.

She says in a school environment, these toys might be a distraction to other children without ADHD.
