Gender violence in the Spotlight

Useful info you need to know in the fight against gender violence

Over the past few months, South Africa has been left stunned by the growing incidents of gender violence that have grown even more brutal. It has made sharing useful contacts and information that could help you, or a loved one even more vital.

Here is a list of organisations that offer help and explains what they do:

The Green Door

The Green Door is an organisation run in Diepsloot by Brown Lekekela and serves as the only place of refuge for women and children who are seeking help in times of crisis.

Lekekela was also part of the team who developed the Vimba App - which can be used to report crime and gender based violence in the area and as a tool for seeking help.

The Vimba Bhekisisa app works when a user dials 134403# from their cellphone. This notifies a server to send a series of three menus, asking the user where they are in Diepsloot and what sort of help they need.

SADAG - The South African Depression and Anxiety Group

SADAG offers a 24 hour hotline on 0800 12 13 14 as well as a Suicide Crisis Line 0800 567 567 or SMS code 31393

Emergency Helpline

This emergency helpline can be used nationwide and is toll free: 0800 428 428 or by dialing 1347355#

ManKind Project

The ManKind Project South Africa is a nonprofit organisation that conducts challenging and highly rewarding programs for men at every stage of life.

The Character Company

Fathers are responsible for protecting their daughters and teaching their sons, but we no longer have the luxury to think that it is enough. There are too many children interacting with our sons and daughters that do not have male role models. This is why we need to get involved – we need more sons to grow up into men that know that what makes you a man is not the ability to have a child, but the courage to raise one!

Sonke Gender Justice

Sonke Gender Justice is a non-partisan, non-profit organisation, established in 2006. Today, Sonke has established a growing presence on the African continent and plays an active role internationally. Sonke works to create the change necessary for men, women, young people and children to enjoy equitable, healthy and happy relationships that contribute to the development of just and democratic societies. Sonke pursues this goal across Southern Africa by using a human rights framework to build the capacity of government, civil society organisations and citizens to achieve gender equality, prevent gender-based violence and reduce the spread of HIV and the impact of AIDS.
