How should the media report on crimes involving minors?

A story of sexual violence reported in the media last week, left Talk Radio 702's Phemelo Motene (standing in for Azania Mosaka) feeling cold because the perpetrators and victim are minors. The girl young was taken to the school's toilet where she was then raped. Motene expressed her concerns of how the media reports on rape and sexual violence involving young children and the sensitivities they carry.

Ayabulela Poro, head of Youth and Children's News Agencies, Media Monitoring Africa says journalists face difficulties when reporting on matters where minors are involved.

So when do you use the term rapist or should they be seeking other terms for instance when reporting on children involved in such crimes?

Ayabulela Poro, head of Youth and Children's News Agencies, Media Monitoring Africa
